Boogie Oogie Oogie - A PhD Proposal
Wandering into work today I hit upon a PhD idea that I think could run and run.
OK, so what if, either by grand cosmic accident or by the evil design of Joe Tex and his Sexolettes, the sum total of human philosophy had become enmeshed in the classic disco hits of the 1970's? Optimistically, This could breath life into the reflexive human endevour for meaning that has been consigned, of late, to the fusty halls of academe. So, in the spirit of the famous 'doobydoobydoo' joke here are:
"I think therefore I am" (Descartes): I am what I am (Gloria Gaynor), I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan). You Make Me Feel Mighty Real (Sylvester).

From a utilitarian perspective: In Maslow's Hierarchy of needs (you know the triangular diagramme that moves from primeval needs at the base to hedonistic satiation at the pinnacle or, put simply: avoid death, get food, have sex. Ooh, mobile phones...) is clearly mirrored in the progression from 'Staying Alive' (Bee Gees) to the self-actualisation of 'Yes Sir, I can Boogie' (Baccara).
"The quest for certainty has played a considerable part in the history of philosophy: it has been assumed that without a basis of certainty all our claims to knowledge must be suspect". (A.J. Ayer) "The ONLY ABSOLUTE TRUTH is that there are NO ABSOLUTE TRUTHS". (Paul Feyerabend) - I Guess you'd better 'Knock on Wood' then (Amii Stewart) or go for the empirical realism of 'Black Is Black' (Belle Epoque)
Man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains (Jean Jacques Rousseau), So, Don't leave me this way (Thelma Houston), .... "Set me free, set me free, set me free, set me free, set me free. Now, 'Young Hearts Run Free' (Candi Staton) and there 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' (McFadden & Whitehead)
Disco; on the transient and ephemeral nature of existence:
"Do or do not, there is no try" (Yoda) - Can you feel the Force? (The Real Thing)
...As for Marx's dialectical inversion of the Hegelian Weltanschaung - well "Ces't Chic"
Last word to A taste of Honey:
Now git on up on the floor
Cuz we're gonna boogie oogie oogie
till you just can't boogie no more
Boogie no more
You can't boogie no more (boogie)
Boogie no more
Get down, boogie oogie oogie
Get down, boogie oogie oogie
Get down, boogie oogie oogie
Expect this post to be added to. A lot.

New web site finally
I have long felt guilty that my University web pages were constructed using tables and were inaccessible and unusable to screen readers and text only browsers. Embarrasing as I teach Usability modules. Anyway, this is all behind me now as I have finally produced a table-less .css driven site thanks to a wonderful template by G. Wolfgang.you can find the site here.

The Wrong Sort of Cruel

The Wrong Sort of Cruel is the first release in in over twenty years from UK producer Peter Every. I'd like to say '20 years in the making', but its more like 2. The music is experimental and doesn't really sound 'like' anyone else. The album is available as a direct MP3 download and also as a full CD (in .bin/.cue format). Both versions come with printable cover art. - I'd really like your reviews and comments if you download the album.
I forgot to say - Track 2 contains some extremely strong language - so don't download if it might offend you.

The Fascination Payload

http://vimeo.com/2191222
I finally managed to upload my film 'The Fascination Payload' to Vimeo.
An impressionistic collage that explores the concept of war as cinema, of our fascination with the spectacle of violence and the distancing effects of technologies of vision. Several hours of footage were collected from Internet sources.
The essay 'The Fascination Payload: Cultural Studies and the first Gulf war' can be found on my home page
Running time: 30 Minutes
Contains scenes of violence and uncensored language
Music composed by Peter Every. Opening theme by Ryuichi Sakamoto. ‘Exit Strategy’ by Peter Every and Panjabi MC
I'd really like to know what you think so please drop a comment here or on the video page.

Videos on the move
I am in the process of moving my animations and video work to vimeo which offers larger resolutions and better quality compression than Youtube. Expect to see a Creative Computing media group there soon as we gear up to the 2009 Film and animation show.
